Would there be any significance to the things that happen in the world if human beings did not possess self-consciousness? Animals and plants, with no self-consciousness, are unaware of even their own existence. Things come and go in the ruthless flow of time. The director wonders if it would be meaningful at all to distinguish between beginnings and endings.
